Technical & hidden line display modes question

I find on a large file (250 megs) that tuning on one of these display takes so long that I just give up after about 7 or 8 minutes, with the computer fan making a hell of a noise as the whole little laptop heats up…

BUT

if it start with only one layer on, enter the display mode i want, and then follow by successively turning on all the other layers, the whole model displays completely almost as fast as I can turn the layers on.

So my question is whats going on here, and why cant rhino mimic what I’m doing manually under the hood, rather than trying to do it all in one hit…?

Are you testing during the same modeling session? The display mode needs to create its own meshes that stay around during the session. If you’re testing between sessions you might want to send over a model.
