T-Splines for Rhino end of life

The tsplines.com forums are shutting down. They’re currently read-only, and will be removed entirely soon.

If there are things you’d like to save from the forum before it is removed, please do so in the next few days.

Tom, any chance you can easily create an archive of the forums that we can download?

I wasn’t able to find a fast way to create an archive, but I did bump up the settings on the forum software, so that entire threads will be on a single page.

Yeah, With ALL of my work being HIGHLY PROPRIETARY, I find handing my models to the Chinese for safe-keeping maybe a bit more problematic than most (not EVEN kidding) so ANYTHING “CLOUD” is SO FAR off my radar that its not even worth considering - no matter HOW HARD they try to push the “We’re COOL - we’re on the CLOUD” functionality, so ANYTHING Cloud-based is a NON STARTER for me, and ANYONE similarly concerned.

As for multiple tool functionality, yeah I regularly use multiple tools. For instance, I’ll use RHINO for my 3D and animating (BONGO) and BricsCAD for my Shop drawings. Only problem I have is that I now need access to Parametric modeling, and FAR MORE IMPORTANTLY_CONSTRAINTS_ . RHINO’s ONLY answer to that in the form of a 3rd party plugin seems was discontinued awhile back. Since I regularly model things FAR more complex than a torus with an embellishment (wedding rings, etc.) some of the RHINO hype with its latest release and now abandoning some other plugins too, well …

The other red flag for ME is the shocking number of dead and broken links on the Food4rhino site. (ANYBODY in charge of cleanup over there ?) SOME good stuff remaining, but I’m wondering if this is a trend of some sort? Developers finding other outlets for their work ? Couldn’t say. Watching, tho. With the deep devotion to all things grasshopper there, and yet the plugins written to use it being SO narrow in focus, well … . I don’t care one whit (even the TINIEST one) to program custom work. If the tool hasn’t been developed, the toolbox is empty, and therefore of less and less value as time goes on … . The ability to custom program a tool taking time away from Product Development has just about ZERO appeal.

Food4rhino has some interesting materials there, but with -6’s extended broadening of its native material library, and related internal resources (like on-line/on-demand materials) I’m wondering about this value, too. Noticed lots of other empty categories, and was just wondering. Seems T-Splines isn’t the only thing that’s nearing end-of-life with RHINO.

Anybody developing ANYTHING new as a useful plugin?

Thanks (!)- and ALL the VERY BEST to all here -

Chuck in Texas.

Which dead links did you find?

A heads up to anyone that has a license for v3.4 of the T-splines plugin or earlier. The license activation server for those versions is going to be shut down by July 19, 2018. If you need to install v3.4 on a new machine, you need to do it before then.

After that we’ll need to shut down the license server and remove old downloads.

Where do I look for that download?

Downloads are at http://www.tsplines.com/latest_version/

Thanks Tom, I was afraid I would have to go digging through the AutoDesk site for that down load. Seeing your old site headers was a bit nostalgic. Should I archive the contest pages for the catamaran and sailplane that I did? Hate to lose that if you guys are closing down the old site.

Looks like those contest results are already moved to a blog address. Now I see that the contest results must be long gone from the T-Splines site. The CAD resellers are using images from the contests though.

Hi @tomfinnigan,

Why not to relase a last version that don’t need any activation?

My english is not good enough to describe the problems I will have without this plugin with the hundreds of old drawings I’ve done if my client asks me for some changes.

Maybe everyone should register their licence to a virtual machine, would that allow you to take the regististration from one hardware to the next ?

it’s very hard for me to say this, but, because I have a proper perpetual license, I’m going to install the cracked version waiting for McNeel to develop a replacement.

because isn’t commercial anymore isn’t illegal, right?

Legality aside: Brilliant! Cracks are produced only by benevolent individuals/entities. Ivan and Wang Wei have no interest in what goes on within your network…:smiling_imp:

Just sayin’

Whenever I read @ec2638 posts I learn something new. A prehistoric vocabulary and a chinese fortune cookie quote :+1:

Hi Joseph, I don’t know who is hosting the contest pages you found, but if it’s not hosted on autodesk.com then it will probably stay up. Basically I had to take down any user-provided content that was hosted on Autodesk servers due to GDPR. I erred on the side of caution, because the fines are extremely punitive.

I don’t know about copyright laws in every country, but in the US, the legality of using a cracked version doesn’t depend on whether the product is currently for sale.

@tomfinnigan
Just let me know why you can’t help us not to lose more time.
I paid the plugin to use it or can I have my money back?

Hi Enzo.

Given the various business and legal constraints that I’m aware of, it’s very unlikely that we will release a free version of the plugin to anyone that wants it. That said, of course we want to make it so existing customers can use it as long as possible.

What version of the plugin are you using? There are some versions that will continue working on the same computer indefinitely but that you won’t be able to install on other computers. There are other versions that can be moved from computer to computer. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, this is due to legal restrictions around the license system in use before the plugin was switched to Autodesk’s license system. I’m happy to work with you to keep your license working as long as possible. If you want to discuss privately, PM me here or email me at tom.finnigan@autodesk.com

Longer term, the underlying T-splines technology has been added to several Autodesk products, and can import/export files with Rhino if you need to make edits to the T-splines inside. If you have any issues with not being able to access or edit T-spline data from your 3dm files, I’m very happy to help.
