SubD modelling thoughts and ideas

Hi!

First of all thank you for SubD, it’s so nice and makes my job so much easier and faster. I iterate so fast now it’s insane.

I have some thoughts on modelling tools for Subd, its nothing very finished, just ideas.

A challenge with Subd is that when I have a complex model and want to do big changes to it, like twist a part of a model its a lot of selecting points, lines and vertices.

My first though was if you could snap vertices to curves and work with curves that control many vertices, it would give fast access to large parts of the model in an easy way.

Maybe grouping vertices/lines/faces could be another way and then I realised that Named Selections is a bit like this but maybe the Named Selections could have visual representation in the viewport, like a box surrounding the items and maybe a gumball functionality?

Another idea would be constraints, like if you could set so two sets of grouped vertices always where perpendicular to another set…

Again, thank you! Love Rhino.

I like this idea a lot. Having a way to turn on a new form of UI for manipulating complex and maybe multiple SubD’s at once would be great.

Selecting vertices and/or edges is a time consuming part of modelling so anything that could speed that up would be great.

big mods can always be done with the UDT tools on subd (like cageedit)

and cage edit can have a curve as a control object

Yeah I love Cage!! But but… then its the whole model and you kind of loose the fine control you have with subd.

In the project I’m working on now I want to experiment with angles on certain parts and it’s a lot going back and forth and inbetween, but only certaint sections of the model and having definable grouped sections of the subd would be really great i think.

If CageEdit worked with a selection of vertices/surfaces it could be a nice middle ground

have you played with the named selections feature?

you can make selections, save them and then modify them with the bend deformer or gumball for that matter… (one of my fav tricks)
