I am new to subd and I would like to know how the columns in this image might be modelled.
Would it be wise to start from multipipe or subd cylinder?

Multipipe would be my best guess how to start…
I’d recommend on-ramping into this by making a smaller, less complex version and develop a workflow.
my WAG as a place to start would be multipipe, then bridge then lots of gumballing…
box mode will be your best friend here to keep the model from getting insane and making sure you don’t make a mess of overlapping insanity.
remember that multipipe can deliver more complexity than you may need. feel free to delete edges with extreme prejudice.
