trying to move some polysrf edges in orhtho directions is producing insane results
I’d need to see the model to be sure, but I bet there is a fillet, blend or some other non linear surface sharing an end point or the actual edge you’re moving. Sub-object selection and modeling currently works best on linear models and there are many cases where adjacent geometry can go crazy. A lot of these are already filed as areas to improve but send your example too if you can. In the meantime, extract surfaces that have issues with this edit first and then join them back into the edited result making new surfaces where necessary.
