Hi everybody, I hope someone can help me. I need to export objects to SLT for 3D printing, and this always works fine. Until this happens. At 4 sides of the flange on top there are bites taken out of the model. The Nurbs is simply a closed curve> sweep1 with a rounded corners square as rail. No bad objects, object is closed, valid, looks all perfect.
So, my question: what causes this bad export and how can I prevent this? I already tried rebuilding, but no difference.
Unfortunately, the STL Mesh Options dialogue has disappeared and I can’t find it back.
Thanks, I thought these were rendering artifacts, but apparently the sweep1 caused it. So I swept again, now with refit rail on, and… success! Thanks for your help.
It depends on the situation. Looking at your file anything that’s going to overall up the polygon count helps, upping the “minimum initial grid quads” usually does the trick.
Now notwithstanding what I said about not needing to change the model there is one command that can help with meshing artifacts that does actually change the model, just not in a way that you can see. It doesn’t seem to make much difference here–I think the source of the issue here is meshing long skinny surfaces with creases in them?–but FYI it’s Reparameterize. Meshing can get confused trying to line up adjacent surfaces when the parameterization, the “internal coordinate system” of a surface, is far out of whack with the actual size, the Automatic option will try to fix that.
You typically get bad meshing when you have internal G1 (tangent) joints. Your model has a bunch of them.
I ran DivideAlongCreases SplitAtTangents=Yes on your model and it went from 63 surfaces to 153. I then exported an STL using the basic 0.01 default STL setting and the result was fine…
