Some Silly Questions

What is Rationalization,Planarization,of surface/geometry.
Developable surface. Thank you

Surface usually have two principal curvatures (curvature in U and V direction)

  • Planarization = to make a surface planar => surface is flat, all points are in one plane => it has both principal curvatures zero, surface is unrolled
  • Developable surfaces = developale surfaces have one principal curvature 0 => gaußian curvature is zero => That means you can unroll a surface to a planar surface (distortion-/kinkfree)
  • Rationalization = That is saying you approximate a double curved (non-developable) surface with developable surfaces (esp. Ruled surfaces).

Seems to be important for architects and naval engineers.
