Solved: Bug: An error occurred while trying to listen for RhinoAccounts

To help others that may encounter this issue.

Running Rhino WIP alongside Rhino 8 since a year or two. Never had licensing issues. But since updating Rhino WIP this July, both 8 & 9 stopped being able to validate license, after the “Login as __@__” button, showing an error box:

An unexpected error occurred.
An error occurred while trying to listen for a request from Rhino
Accounts. Please ensure your device’s firewall allows Rhino to listen
for requests.

Suggestions from other posts that did not help

Disabling Firewall

Rhino re-install/repair

Updating WIP

Disabling Hyper-V

Tricking Rhino into offline registration works for some days but breaks License in Team.

Solution

Disabling an unrelated (and not in use) Bluetooth network adapter solved the issue. That is only needed to let WIP validate the license once. Subsequent license validations do work with the adapter being again enabled.

So apparently Rhino happens to choose unrelated/unused network adapters at times for its license validation and sticks to that one until you find a way to force it over another one.

Sounds much like a bug to me.

I haven’t heard of this one. Are you on a laptop? What is the model? Rhino doesn’t choose anything network wise.

Yes, a laptop: Dell XPS 9575, which has had Win 10 & 11 over the years.
No doubt Rhino/Licensing Service doesn’t actually choose/stick to one network, but that’s the best description of the behavior it showed, that I can think of.
Nothing I tried over a few weeks would solve the issue, except :

I disabled that other (all) network adapter(s) for the time of one single successful license validation

Re-enabling that did not prevent licensing checks anymore since then.

I could add some other tries to the list:
reboots
different Wifi networks
re-installs of 8 and/or 9 in different succession
deleting AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\License Manager\Licenses

And obviously no connection issues over web browsers to the accounts.rhino3d.com and api.mcneel.com
