'Soft' effect on objects behind glass in 'Monochrome' - avail. elsewhere?

In the ‘Monochrome’ display mode objects behind glass (i’m presuming behind any transparent object?) are shown without hard edges, giving this pleasing ‘soft’ effect:

Is this option available in other display modes? Or is it exclusive to ‘monochrome’? I’ve had a bit of a poke around in the options but didn’t find any obvious checkbox that creates this effect.

In rendered mode if you use transparent plastic instead of glass you can get a similar effect-

and you can fake it in other view styles with a per object rendered mode assignment that has a transparent material.

to do this use the _SetObjectDisplayMode command
