Slow layout

Hey,

I find that while working in layout with multiple details open it slows down to the point that working is frustrating. I have 2x 2070 and 32gb ram with a i7 6800k cpu. Other friends have better hardware including a 3090 and still have this problem. Would a quadro card work better? Is it possible to make my details freeze so they are not eating into resources? Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

Edit: Im using rhino 7

Hello - are your files very complex? Where does the problem show, while navigating in a layout, navigating in an active detail (what is the display mode?) , both?

Typically they are complex scenes and I like to use ambient occlusion in my details. Not a good combo I am sure.

Hello - does performance get noticeably better in a layout if the details are all in Shaded mode?

Hi, I have a similar issue.
When a file is open in v6 layout views run smooth,
when I open the very same file with v7, layout views lag, freeze etc.

I’ve been trying out the new version 7 but for now I think I’ll stick to v6.
Any perspectives on fixing the new release soon? It seems promising!

I have similar issues with 7, non responsive, freeze, crash. Takes at least a minute to gather and open Maxwell materials. Went back to r5 and no issues.

Hello -

Please run the SystemInfo command in Rhino and copy/paste the results here.
If you disable Maxwell in Options > Plug-ins page and then close and reopen Rhino - does the lag still occur?

Pascal,

Turning off Maxwell 5 in Rhino 7 does solve the issue. Opening an existing file is a two-step process though. First it will open the file successfully then it will go out and try to find the textures but the path (s) aren’t correct, so it’s double the time to open. This doesn’t happen in v5. I haven’t been able to point to the correct texture folder. Let me know where I can do that in options.

So even though the textures aren’t found when opening I can raytrace the viewport and render with cycles correctly.

Turning Maxwell back on and moved some objects around I get the spinning wheel non-response so looks like Maxwell is the issue.

I wouldn’t mind ditching Maxwell but I do have quite a few custom textures built. Can Kyle do a Maxwell to Cycles tutorial?
