Sidebars only show bottom panel, rest invisible

I just updated to the latest build available (Version 8 WIP (8.0.23186.12306, 2023-07-05)), and immediately noticed an issue with the sidebars.

My normal UI setup has a right sidebar with 3 panels (commands, properties, layers), and no left sidebar. After updating, 2/3 of my sidebar panels (commands and properties) are no longer visible, they just show as a solid gray area. They are still there - if I start typing a command, the dropdown list of suggested commands will show up, and if I hover my mouse over the blank properties panel, my cursor will change in certain spots as if I’m mousing over a button, I just can’t see it.

I was having other issues with my UI in the last build (Toolbar and which layer tabs are visible resets after every app launch - #5 by ㅂ11) such as a redundant toolbar that kept showing up after every app launch, and the update to this new version did not fix that issue, so I tried a few things:

First, I used the Reset command to set the UI back to defaults, but it did not solve the old toolbar issue or the new sidebar visibility issue. Then, I tried the factory reset option within the Reset command, which also did not solve either issue. Finally, I decided to fully delete the app (and the plist) and reinstall. This fixed the toolbar issue, but my sidebar panels are still invisible.

I tried messing around with the UI a little bit to see what would happen if I placed them elsewhere. Here’s what I noticed:

If I place one single panel in either sidebar, it works.

If I add more than one panel into the same sidebar (such as Command panel + Properties panel), the bottom one will be visible, and the top one(s) will not. Which panel is in which position doesn’t seem to matter, just the position.

If I leave the panels floating, not in a sidebar, they work.

This issue makes my normal UI setup completely unusable, and I’m not sure if it’s possible to downgrade to a previous build, so I guess I will have to leave them floating for now

I also tried disabling metal using the TestMetal command, because in the last build, half of the viewports (like Perspective/Front/Top/Right etc.) would similarly show a solid gray screen when metal was turned on, and turning it off fixed that issue. It had no effect on this sidebar issue.

Hi ㅂ -
Could you please run the Rhino SystemInfo command and copy-paste the result here?

From that other thread, your screenshots and info show that you didn’t have this panel issue on (8.0.23164.14306, 2023-06-13). On Mac, Rhino isn’t “installed” but “unpacked” and you can unpack different versions to different locations or names without them inferring with one another. Let us know if the issue goes away with that version.

I would really not call that “fixing” the issue. Running Rhino 8 on OpenGL is for debugging purposes only. That said, it’s indicative of a bigger issue with your setup and I hope that the systeminfo data can throw some light on this…

Here’s the system info:

systeminfo.txt (4.9 KB)

When I said fixing, I meant more like a workaround to allow me to keep going rather than stopping me in my tracks. I thought the viewport issue was not limited to my machine because I saw this post:

And it sounded similar (though not exactly the same) to what I was experiencing. The replies on that thread mentioned it being a metal issue, so I turned metal off and it worked. But maybe it was an unrelated issue and I just misinterpreted it

Also regarding the top toolbar that I thought I got rid of by deleting and reinstalling the app… it returned :frowning:

Hi ㅂ -
Thanks for that SystemInfo data - that looks fine.

Does that mean that you tried to use the June 13 version to see if the issue went away?
