Is there some trick to show sub-layer but hide its parent 
Other than just hiding the parent’s objects and keeping the layers visible?
Not that I know of - that’s part of the point of sublayers, to be able to control visibility/selectability of sets of related objects/components…
I need an extended functionality where the layers keep track of the hierarchy of the objects, but have separate/independent visibility setting.
Good luck with that…
