Ship boats

A few ship boats for 3D printing

What are these based on - drawings, photos, measurements of existing boats, creativity?

The boats are made based on original shipbuilding plans of ships from the 18th and 19th centuries

these are really cool!!

would love to see pics of the finished 3d printed parts!

It would be interesting to learn a bit more about the boats, and where you found the resources/data to recreate them. Very old lines plans, models, info etc?

These boats were created based on the books in the “Anatomy of the Ship” series.

Thank you for the nice link

There is also Mystic Seaport that has the works of many designers on file. I have copies of hacker craft designs provided from them.

A fast render one of them.

Hi Maciek, your boats are absolutelly stunning! I would like to do model boats based on lines plans that I got from a French model boats magazine. I have just started with Rhino 8, so I am a real newbie. Is there maybe a good tutorial on what to do when modelling a ship based on lines plans or how do you do it? I assume, having the three perspectives in place as scaled background images is a good starting point, right?

Thanks Michael

I have used the Picture command and Scale2D to bring the images in place and scale them and then locked the layers, but I am not sure about the alignment of all the three images, how to do that? So far I just did it roughly by looking at it, but that is probably not very accurate, is there a better way to do it?

Thanks Michael

Hi Michael,

In our training for professionals and other enthusiasts, we focus on modelling fair ship hulls and also cover reverse engineering based on for example your images.
We offer the training as pure self-study: https://www.rhinocentre.com/product/training-hull-design-and-fairing-1and2/
Or as the self-study plus 4 online live sessions of 2hours each: https://www.rhinocentre.com/product/hull-design-and-fairing-level-1and2-bundle-live/

This training consists of three training modules and in the Prepare2D module, you’ll learn to align these images.

Hi Gerard, thanks a lot, that sounds like exactly the knowledge that I would need!

Will have a closer look!

Thanks Michael

Hi Gerard, what are prerequisite for such a training? Would you say, if I watched the Youtube training videos for beginners that woudl be enough or would I need a year or so of working with Rhino?

Thanks Michael

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your enthusiasm. The most important thing is that you put in the time to complete the exercises of the training. Many trainees in the training are too busy with the job and private life to really spend the time in learning the skills.
It’s also important that you’ve already modeled some simple objects in Rhino, so you have some practical experience using Rhino and its user interface.

You can, for example, exercise the free Rhino Level 1 training: Rhinoceros Help

It is not crucial that you finish all exercises of the Level 1 training, but at least do a large part of it.

Hi Gerard,

thanks a lot! I am really considering the ship hull design training although I am only an (amateur) model boat builder. I will think it over and do some practice until then.

Thanks Michael

Hi Michael,

Sure, take your time.

I’ve had many hobbyists in the training and they all were very happy with it. Quite often they spend much more time in learning the skills that are necessary. Many pro’s are very limited in their time to learning it.

Hi Gerard, thanks a lot. So, is it really so, that model boat builders use the same techniques, CAD skills, etc. as professional boat builders? So, the courses you mentioned would really be ok for people like me who want to bring a 2D ships hull lines plan into a 3D model in Rhino and later use it as a reference for, say a laser cutter to make the frames, keel, etc. for a wooden boat model?

Thanks Michael

Yes, That’s the fun of it. Whether you model and fair a scaled hull for hobby or a large hull for a ship yard, the Rhino skills are the same.
