Setting for auto backup

Is it possible to make the mac version create backup versions more often? Is this controlled by the applicaiton or the OS?

cmmd-S will save another version. (File-> Save)

fwiw, if a model has unsaved changes in it, there will be a black dot inside the red one:

once a version is saved, the black dot goes away:

likewise, the file name at top-middle of the window will say Edited when there are unsaved changes in the model.
