Selecting multiple curves

Hi,
I’m new to this and must have missed the "how to’ and cannot find the answer anywhere, but how do I select multiple curves (or multiples of anything else)?

I can select multiples by expanding a box, but when I need to select, for example, two outer lines on each side of a grid, I cannot do it.

It seems a simple command but I cannot do it.

Please help.

Hi Paul - holding Shift allows adding to a selection, Ctrl removes, and both down selects sub-objects, like surface edges.
