Section Tools - Clipping plane on separate layer

Dear @rajaa I started using section tools since it is included in Rhino WIP.

Maybe I’m doing something wrong but I find it annoying that after creating a section the clipping plane is hidden. To edit the section and have it in an arbitrary angle, I unlocked the section layer and showed all content. I can now rotate the clipping plane. Then hide it and lock the layer.

I think it would be more effective to have the section clipping plane on a separate layer by default.

Hi @martinsiegrist
That is reasonable request. I’m working on a more integrated approach to creating the section so that it is easy to edit.

Another small wish, it would be great if a section clipping plane could be selected by clicking on the dot.

Hi Martin, please get the latest Rhino WIP. Sections are now created with the new SectionObject that behaves much like other Rhino objects (you can select directly, move, rotate, copy, delete, etc.). I think you will find it much more intuitive.

Thanks, I saw that today. I think it is easier this way.

However, the wish remains. I might not want to see the text dot so I would prefer to have the dot and maybe also the section line with the arrows on a separate child layer.

Furthermore it would be great if the dot could be selected and not just the section line.

I think it is essential that the text dot can be exploded into text too. I haven’t found a way so far.

So I just tried again. Would you recommend to create all sections on a certain layer? I see the section result is on the layer SEC_00. The selected section object is stored in the current layer.

Yes, this is how I do it to be able to turn off the section widgets if you like. Also, in the next RhinoWIP, you will be able to place these lines anywhere and out of the way if you wish.

Somehow I have a hard time wrapping my head around the CPlane orientation…

My current scenario looks like this. The two breps in blocks in an arbitrary orientation…

To get the section shown on the screenshot I need a plane like the current CPlane.

What is the reason a section isn’t created in the current CPlane but perpendicular to it?

Somehow I think it would be easier to define a CPlane perpendicular to an edge instead like on the second screenshot. Looking at the CPlane would be identical to looking at the Named View.

If you run ClippingSections command, the Dir option has CPlane. Does that help?

Yes, thank you Rajaa. The CPlane option is great.
