RhinoWIP for V9 minimum macOS Version

Hi All-

Currently, as of today, the RhinoWIP for Mac supports macOS Monterey (12.4) as the minimum macOS version. This will NOT be the case for Rhino 9.

In the not too distant future, we plan to set the minimum required version to macOS Sequoia (15). The vast majority of WIP users (85%) are on Sequoia or the Tahoe beta. What is currently under consideration is the timing of this change.

If you are on Monterey, Ventura, or Sonoma and are actively testing the RhinoWIP, we’d like to hear from you and give you time to update.

PS: In case you missed it, Intel support is coming to an end in Rhino 9 for Mac.

Hi Dan, Casually reading the forum today and bumped into this. Caught me a bit by surprise…

I am on a macpro 2019, sonoma, few issues going on here with other software, so have not updated to sequoia yet.

I use the v9 WIP as my default, so i will need to back track to v8 with any files and also not update the WIP going forward to maintain that system?
Thanks

Please note that we are not going to support Intel based Macs for Rhino 9 so it doesn’t matter what version of macOS you update to with your macpro 2019.

I would recommend saving your files to v8 format. The current Rhino WIP will last for 44 more days and then it will no longer run.

Sorry about the inconvenience this may cause.

Hi @dan,

The news about the move away from Intel support feels sudden and disappointing. For many of us who still rely on Intel-based Macs, it’s becoming clear that this hardware isn’t going to be prioritized anymore, with more and more apps dropping support. I can understand that Rhino may need to move forward, and I’m not surprised by the shift itself - do not mistake it, I am sad about this, and hate having to choose between Rhino and prolonging my hardware’s life.

However, what feels frustrating is the way this has been communicated. Just five days after this forum post, I can no longer even open RhinoWIP, which feels like a missed opportunity to provide users with more time to adjust or plan. We all understand the need to move on from older technology, but the abruptness of this change, coupled with the lack of advanced notice, leaves a lot to be desired.

Even Blender, while also dropping Intel support, communicated this well in advance (four months ago) and gave users time to adapt. I feel like we deserve a bit more consideration in this regard. I’ve always followed Rhino’s development closely and appreciate the work that goes into it, but this communication gap feels a bit out of step with the usual transparency I’ve come to expect.

We are talking about WIP software, i.e. WORK IN PROGRESS, not the release version… As far as I know V8 will still run on Intel Macs. The release version of V9 is probably at least a year away, so you are getting a lot of advanced notice.

Rhino 8, even future service releases, will always be supported on Intel Macs.

Hi @flixchameroy

I agree that we could have communicated this better. In hindsight, we should have pinned this topic - or even something more clear - to the top of this (and other) categories here on Discourse - over a month ago (when it was first posted). It was too hidden in the pile to be seen by enough of the community.

This is not accurate. Today is Monday, 21 July, 2025. We plan to ship the first RhinoWIP that drops Intel support tomorrow, Tuesday, 22 July. That means that the current RhinoWIP (shipped on 15 July) - 9.0.25196.12306 - still supports Intel. You can download 9.0.25196.12306 if you don’t already have it. That RhinoWIP expires around the end of August. As of right now, you have 39 days to use that RhinoWIP. After we ship the next RhinoWIP, refrain from updating. If you accidentally do update, just download it again…it will continue working until it expires at the end of August.

I realize this is cold comfort. It’s still not much time. I do fundamentally agree we could have done a better job announcing this far and wide. I hope you can accept my apology. I hope we don’t lose you.

FYI: We are currently planning to require macOS Sequoia (15) or later in the next RhinoWIP for Mac.

RH-86501 is fixed in Rhino WIP

Today’s RhinoWIP requires macOS Sequoia (15) or later.

If you are running macOS Ventura, Monterey, or Sonoma and accidentally updated, you can temporarily use the previous RhinoWIP from last week until it expires. Please take the time to save any important work as V8 3dm files.
