The same file in V5 and in V6 versions -
Rendering mode is ok in V5.54 - but Render mode viewport is totally black in V6.18

  • would someone please help me out?

KITCHEN V5.3dm (3.9 MB)

KITCHEN V6.3dm (10.4 MB)

I tried change the Lightning Scheme in Rendered Mode to “No lightning”

Now in all viewports that are in rendered mode, I see a close up of one of the materials
and a notice " creating meshes…"

it all seems really weird , and I would even go as far as to say… a bug ?

Its been 6 days now, 78 views, and not a single response…
Is this not something significant?
Please help. Such a bug (if that is the case) is quite deterring for my further use of Rhino 6, so for the time being, Im still using V5 for my projects, getting “this is obsolete software” promts everytime I open up Rhino.
So… please help me, what is causing this issue?

Thanks Hans henrik

Does this also happen in the current service release (6.17)?

I dont know if this would also be a problem in 6.17

the issue came when
A: I upgraded to service release candidate 6.18
B: I opened a V5 file and saved it in 6.18

How do i go back to 6.17 ?

oh sorry - I have just downloaded the service release 6.17 from mcneel.com

So… the file opens fine in the service release 6.17

View ports in rendered mode is black or with a sample of material on entire viewport in service release candidate 6.18

FYI

Thanks

Hi @ohlers-

Sorry for the delayed reply. I was finally able to track down the exact same MacMini (Macmini7,1) and test with the file you provided (thanks btw!). Unfortunately, I was unable to reproduce the issue.

Here are the steps I took to (attempt to) reproduce this:

  1. Launched Rhino 6 for Mac 6.18.19246.01092 on a Macmini7,1.
  2. Opened your KITCHEN V6.3dm.
  3. Set the Perspective viewport to Rendered mode.
  4. Orbited the view.

It all worked as expected. No black viewports. Please let me know if I’m missing something attempting to reproduce this.

The difference between the Macmini7,1 I tested with you and your’s is that ours is running macOS Mojave 10.14.6 (whereas you are running High Sierra 10.13.6). Apple does tend to fix bugs in GPU drivers - even for older ones - in macOS updates, so this might be the case with your issue.

I admit, it is odd that it did work with 6.17, but the black viewports appear in 6.18. It is possible we changed (maybe fixed!) something in your display code that cause this to stop working for you.

@ohlers have you customized your rendered display mode at all? If so, can you export it and attach it to this thread?

I think the problem with my black rendered mode in 6.18 has something to do with file data transfer from V5 to V6.
The file was originally created in 5.5.4 and then opened in 6.17 (which was fine). I then upgraded to service release candidate 6.18 and opened the original V5.5.4 version in the 6.18 service release candidate, and thats when I got the black window in rendered mode. I did not modify the rendered mode in that proces.

Today I have turned up antialiasing to 4X in 6.17, to have more smooth lines, similar to how it looks in 5.5.4. but this was another issue, unrelated to this thread.

@ohlers Are you still experiencing this problem? If so, I’ll just echo Steve’s question above. I think we’re wondering if there is some incompatibility in the render mode customizations.

I opened your Kitchen V6 file in Rhino Mac V6, it looks ok in rendered viewport, then I opened your Kitchen V5 file in Mac V6 too, the rendered viewport had a dark grey murky like appearance. Then I switched back to the V6 file tab and that too had changed to the same murky grey appearance as the V5 file had, strange goings on

No problems in V6.19
