Rhino Updates after 8.15.25019.13002 causing issue & Rhino WIP

At present I am running Rhino 8 (8.15.25019.13002, 2025-01-19) to be precise.

If I update to any of the later version then I end up with a similar situation that I have back in February 2024. The icons for the Rhino 8 template files are missing.

When you work with children who have additional support needs then change can be a problem.

This may not seem like an issue to most, but theses changes have the potential to cause a meltdown.

So for this reason I have not updated any of our devices to a Rhino 8 version that I have mentioned above.

I would also like to point out the same thing happens with Rhino WIP is installed.

Please see the attached images.

Hi Dave-

I believe what you are experiencing is this:

RH-84357 QuickLook and Thumbnails not working on macOS Sequoia

This bug should be fixed in 8.17 (so I am concerned that you are still seeing it in the RhinoWIP). My guess is this is an instance of the 8.15 build (which I would expect to experience this bug) and the WIP competing it out for which can be the Quicklook/Thumbnail provider.

Try this:

  1. Update to Rhino 8.20 for Mac and launch it.
  2. In Rhino, run the command: TestFindAllRhinoApps …this will show you if there are any lingering older (and broken) versions that might cause problems on macOS Sequoia.
  3. Delete those older versions.
  4. Quit Rhino.
  5. Launch Terminal.app from Spotlight.
  6. In Terminal, at the prompt, paste in this command: qlmanage -r cache; killall Finder and press return. This tells the QuickLook process manager to start to delete the cache and then restarts Finder.
  7. Wait a few minutes and then restart Rhino. The issue may be resolved already (depending on how fast Finder can rebuild the thumbnails).
  8. If it’s still not resolved, navigate to System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions > Extensions > Quick Look and hit the little info (i) button. In the dialog, make sure Rhino 8’s extensions are enabled…
  9. Restart your Mac.
  10. Leave your Mac alone for a few minutes (again, it can take time to rebuild the thumbnail cache).

Hope that helps!

Good morning Dan,

Thank you for your reply.

I have followed the procedure through and we still are not seeing all what we should be.

Therefore I have had to revert back to my earlier version to avoid any possible issues.

Rhino WIP has also been removed.

Kind regards

Dave

Hi Dan,

Forgive me for sending this second message.

I have just been through the process of rebuilding another one our MacBooks with macOS Sequoia 15.5.

We have installed all our apps that we use on a regular basis, Rhino 8 & Rhino WIP have also been installed.

I performed a number of tests with Quick Look on and off for both versions of Rhino and results are in my attached images.

Kind regards

Dave

Ah, we are now making some progress though…thanks for your patience, btw!

In your initial post, I should have noticed from your second image - the one of the V9 WIP - that some of the icons for the templates were, indeed there. Looks to me like, in 8.20 onward, the remaining bugs is that “Small Objects - Inches” is still not working. Now that I check that, I can see that here too…which means we can likely fix that up in an upcoming release.

Logged here:

RH-88043 Templates: Thumbnail missing for Small Objects - Inches

Thanks again for reporting this!

Hi Dan,

No problem.

Kind regards

Dave
