Rhino resetting custom display modes

Hello,

Someone else from my org had originally put in a forum post about this issue as well. It continues to happen to our users but they have decided until now to deal with re-importing or recreating their rhino display modes.

The “settings-Scheme__Default.xml” file seems to have been overwritten with a new “settings-Scheme__Default.xml” file after the 27th since we have backups of these files. He found that the file on the 27th had the custom display mode in the file where the new one did not.

Here is the users system info who most recently had the issue (5-12-26)

Rhino 8 SR29 2026-3-4 (Rhino 8, 8.29.26063.11001, Git hash:master @ bbd126f84fcdaf7a974615b7c9f4f8667571c147)

Windows 10 (10.0.19045 SR0.0) or greater (Physical RAM: 64GB)
Running on a virtual machine: VMware7,1
.NET 8.0.24

Computer platform: DESKTOP

Standard graphics configuration.

Secondary graphics devices.
   NVIDIA A40-8Q (NVidia) Memory: 8GB, Driver date: 9-22-2025 (M-D-Y).
    > Accelerated graphics device with 4 adapter port(s)
        - There are no monitors attached to this device!

ATTENTION:
Desktop is using the slower, less reliable integrated graphics device and probably needs a configuration change.

There is only one monitor detected, but it's connected to the slower, integrated graphics video port.

   - Recommended: Unplug the monitor and plug it into one of the video ports on this device:
         \[NVIDIA A40-8Q\]

\* Any hardware configuration or cabling changes you make will require that you restart Rhino.

There are a number of variables here. Any additional information would be helpful

Hi Elisha -

That file gets overwritten pretty much constantly. Amongst other things, it includes the MRU list, so as soon as you open or save a file that you haven’t opened in a while, this file will get updated.

Apart from that, as stated in the thread that you link to, we are aware of this happening but have been unable to reproduce this at will. In my personal experience it was related to a plug-in, but not one that you have in your system info.

Hi Japhy, what kind of information would be useful for troubleshooting this issue?

I can ask the user to disable the plugin since he does not use Enscape anyway but it could be a while before we run into the issue again.

Hi Wim,

We found that the file had the custom display modes but was acting as if they were not there and the file was wiped to default. I understand that troubleshooting these intermittent issues are very hard without being able to replicate but just wanted to check in if anyone had ideas on where to go next.
