I’ve taken some heat for hating on Windows lately. Ironically when I bought my copy of Windows 2000 Professional, I was pretty happy with it. Windows XP added Cleartype and a Fisher-Price theme. From there it slid downhill and hit a few bumps at 7 and 10. Windows for me now is: Only show what little data you need to, and reboot as soon as possible. I have at least 3 legal Windows Professional licenses, and having dual OS’s is not easy to cheap to maintain, but I don’t (edit: trust) Microsoft with my data.
With the extensive PM help of a forum member (thank you) , I was able to get Rhino 3D installed under Wine/Linux Mint/Cinnamon.
Though, there are so far two issues:
1.) There is fairly serious screen refresh issue. It appears that the screen is not repainting the screen after a viewport change or menu use.
2.) The fonts are unusably small under 4k (3840x2160)–even at 32" Giving a ~140DPI.
I tried both Wine setting, and a Wine registry hack. Neither solved this:
Still, it was inspiring to see a Rhino 3D icon on my desktop, after a successful install!

As I have stated, at this stage, I hope that the effort to run Rhino under Linux and Wine is successful. I think I do understand McNeel’s position; for now the Linux market is still small, so perhaps compatibility rather than an outright embrace of Linux would be understandable.

In other news, Microsoft appears to have updated their Privacy statement to include training their AI on their customer’s data. How can we have intellectual property with this?

There is some command-line commands that I used to decrease the DPI of a Wine installation and made the font munch bigger. I don’t remember them but an AI can help-you in this regard.
Hi Everyone, I’ve been following this thread for years now. I would really like to switch to linux and its looking like a native version is a long way off. How usable is rhino 8/9 running on a vm like winboat? is it buggy? I will be using rhino every day for work so it has to be stable. Can anyone who is using it like this regularly let me know how its going for them?
To everyone new here or not regualarly watching this Thread.
We started a Petition with the target to get a number of voices to call for Rhino natively on Linux.

And it still sems a bit nerdy and tricky to install.

Hi John, it works for my purposes in daily use. I still cannot imagine why, when we have Claude Code, Codex, and Kimi models that are so good at OpenGL and other visualization frameworks, McNeel does not port its existing workflow to Linux.
Now there really is no excuse that it would take too much time to maintain relative to the number of users…
McNeel is the best, please allocate someone to do this…
