When I attempt to convert a dimension from decimal to inches, as seen in my animation example here, the original number 12.50 changes to 1/2.

Can you provide a simple file and step-by-step instructions?
It sounds a bit like you are changing from decimal mm to fractional inches…

Correct me where I go wrong.
12.5 mm = 0.4921245 inch
0.4921245 inch = 1/2 inch with tolerance 1/4 inch.
