When I export from Rhino to use on a rendering software (I have tried both .fbx and .dae files and have the same issue) (I imported the same file into Lumion and D5 and both times it looked the same), some areas are simply not there and others have no materials assigned to them, and just come out black. I have only used the materials that are already included in Rhino, and I have only assigned materials to layers not individual objects, and some parts of the same layer come out with materials and other bits don’t. It appears that the bits I have worked on most recently have come out but the older bits haven’t, I tried refresh textures and it made no difference. I am unsure what else to try.
Does your Rhino geometry contain blocks?
Yes, blocks I have created not ones that have been imported. The blocks have partially exported in some cases.
You might want to share a file or a part of it so someone can take a look
Because the same missing/black areas appear in both Lumion and D5, the common point is probably the Rhino export rather than either renderer. Blocks plus layer-assigned materials are the first things I would isolate.
Before exporting the full model again, I would make a duplicate file and test one failing block:
- Run Check and SelBadObjects, then ShowEdges to look for naked edges.
- Copy one problematic block, explode only that copy, and export it once as FBX/DAE. If it works, the block definition/nesting is the cause.
- Replace its material temporarily with a plain Rhino material. Built-in/procedural materials do not always transfer as portable textures, so a black result can be a material-translation issue rather than missing geometry.
- Export the same small object as STEP as a geometry-control test. STEP will not preserve the look, but it tells you whether the solids themselves survive the handoff.
Disclosure: I’m a co-founder of Neexis. We are testing a browser workflow for Rhino/STEP/STL models, so this is also a useful failure case for us. If you can export one non-confidential failing block as STEP, I’m happy to test it and report exactly what survives (geometry, block parts and material regions), including failures. The Rhino-specific test page is here: Modela con precisión. Presenta con velocidad. · Neexis Render
I don’t know if my OneDrive is the problem but I cannot download the file.
Why don’t you just drag and drop a file into a new post?
