Seeking Structural Engineer - Computational Design Expert for Air Dome Manufacturing (Rhino/Grasshopper/Kangaroo)
Covair Structures is UK’s only manufacturer of air-supported structures is seeking a Rhino/Grasshopper expert to revolutionise our 40-year manufacturing process through computational design. We’ve installed over 100 air domes across prestigious venues including David Lloyd Leisure, Virgin Active, and Premier League football clubs, but our current manufacturing relies on decades of empirical knowledge rather than optimised design.
We’ve already established a Grasshopper framework with cable network definitions and Kangaroo physics simulation that’s proven superior to traditional FEA software for our complex dome+cable geometry. What we need is someone to complete the force analysis exploration, optimise our proven 7-pad cable system, and bridge the computational model to manufacturing documentation. This isn’t standard parametric design work - it requires understanding of membrane structural behaviour, cable tension distribution, and validation against engineering principles.
The role involves completing cable system optimisation for enhanced wind and snow load resistance, extending the framework to lightweight PVC variants, and generating precise cutting patterns and assembly instructions from 3D models. You’ll be transforming artisanal craftsmanship into scalable, data-driven production whilst maintaining the product excellence that’s built our reputation over four decades.
This is an opportunity to see computational design become physical infrastructure, working with unique membrane structure technology in a rapidly growing company. We’re looking for advanced Rhino/Grasshopper proficiency, Kangaroo physics simulation experience, and crucially, understanding of tensioned membrane systems and structural behaviour. Portfolio examples of tension/cable network optimisation and collaboration with structural engineers essential.
