We are preparing Rhino models for LPBF CuCrZr cold plates that will be stress-relieved, CNC-finished, pressure-tested, and thermally validated. The solid geometry is manageable; revision handoff is where ambiguity appears.
Our current 3DM structure is:
- a locked AS_PRINTED body layer;
- separate MACHINING_STOCK surfaces for sealing faces and ports;
- an INSPECTION layer for datum targets and probe-access geometry;
- a CHANNEL_KEEP_OUT layer that survives export;
- one revision-matched 3DM, STEP, and drawing PDF.
For people using Rhino in an additive-to-machining workflow:
- Would you keep machining allowance as separate closed solids, offsets, or object user text?
- Are Named CPlanes reliable enough for downstream datum communication, or do you also model explicit datum targets?
- How do you stop inspection and keep-out geometry from being lost when the STEP file is opened outside Rhino?
