Rhino BETA Feature: Template Layers for Clipping Drawings

In the Rhino WIP, you can now use template layers when creating Clipping Drawings.

What are clipping drawings’ layers?

Clipping drawings are 2D geometry generated from clipping sections. They can be projected onto the section plane or placed parallel to the World XY plane. The results are organized in a locked layer structure that separates the section from the background. You can set the drawings to inherit the properties of their output layer.

What are clipping drawing template layers?

Create clipping drawing template layers and set their properties, color, linetype, print width — once. With each new clipping drawing, the ClippingDrawings command references this list of template layers, giving you full control over the properties of the clipping drawings’ output layer organization.

Why is a reference template useful?

Clipping drawing template layers include all standard drawing layer properties. You can set the layers’ properties once per document, or save them in a project template file. Drawings that inherit properties from their output layers will then reference the template’s properties.

How to Create and Reference Template Layers for Clipping Drawings:

Before creating any drawings:

  • Run the CreateClippingDrawingTemplate command once per document to create the reference layers.
  • Set the layer properties to your project standard (you can save this in a template file).

To reference the template from drawings:

  1. Run the ClippingDrawings command.
  2. In the dialog, set Properties to By output layers.
  3. Pick a placement point to locate the clipping drawing in the Top view.
  4. All output layer properties will match those in the template layers.

Notes:

  • If you change the template layer properties after creating a drawing, the change will not affect existing drawing layers when they are updated or the clipping plane is moved. This protects any changes made to individual drawing layers. To apply the new changes, delete the drawing layers and recreate the drawing by running the ClippingDrawings command.
  • Do not change the layer names in the template — they are referenced by your clipping drawings.
  • You can set the layer properties for your visible background curves (objects that are not sectioned) in the Visible not Sectioned layer of the template. This applies to your Background → Visible not Sectioned layer.
