Clipping drawings can now be placed in one global set of layers, instead of a separate layer tree per clipping section. This keeps the layer list short and lets you organize all your drawings, and set their properties, in one place.
What are Clipping Drawings?
Clipping drawings are dynamic 2D drawings extracted from clipping sections, projected either onto the clipping section plane or parallel to the World XY-Plane.
Why output to one global layer?
By default, each clipping drawing creates its own set of section/background sub-layers, so a model with many sections can produce a long, repetitive layer list. Sending every drawing to a single global set of layers keeps the Layers panel clean and gives you one place to control the appearance of all drawings at once, set a linetype, color, or print width on the global layer and every drawing follows.
How to output to the global layer
Run the ClippingDrawings command and select your clipping plane(s).
In the dialog, turn on Output to Clipping Drawings layer.
Set the other options as usual, then click OK.
All drawings are placed under a shared layer set named Clipping Drawings.
Notes:
This option works with Properties = From input objects or By output layers. It is not available with Use source layers, which already places output on each object’s own source layer.
The global layers share the same structure and name as the layers created by the CreateClippingDrawingTemplate command. So you can define the template once, then use Properties = By output layers together with this option to control the appearance of every drawing from a single set of layers.
The Clipping Drawings layer name is fixed (it can be localized). Don’t rename it, renaming causes a new layer structure to be created on the next update.
Hi @rajaa I’m answering you here to keep the conversation about Global Clipping layer all togheter.
What I see from your video is that I can’t define the name of the “clipping drawing layer” during the creation.
I imagine I can change this name later but having a fixed name it’s reductive also when you have to translate it for the different language.
I don’t know how long is to add this option but I’m exepcting to have the same behaviour we have for the Make2D command where you can type the name of the Root layer.
The subLayer can keep the name you gave them, they are comprehensible and has sense to hae them organized baased on the line category.
I do see your point, and I had this discussion with @wim and @mary and we decided not to offer a “name” option and opt to the checkbox to output to the Global Layer to keep it simple.
The “Clipping Drawings” name is the same as the one created with “CreateTemplateDrawings” command, and it should not be changed, otherwise a new structure will be created with updates. We can localize it.
Simplicity is always a good choice so I will not complain.
If I can suggest one thing is that “Clipping Drawing” isn’t an explicative name nor intuitive.
It does’n not connect to technical drawing. Could it be simply “Technical Drawing” or “2D Drawing”?
We chose “Clipping Drawings” because this is the name of the command that creates them and is somewhat unique, but I do see your point. We are open to suggestions.
