Rhino 9 release date ? Rhino 6 from Rhino 8 or should I wait?

Officially we are in BETA, see you in september.

It’s available for download :eyes:

Rhino 9 is still only available as the WIP/Beta to owners of Rhino 8 licenses, even though the image by Rhino.Inside.Revit might imply otherwise.

Hello everyone,

I just received a notification from Rhino as the following:

I already have a R8 version, can I update to R9 now or just download the new BETA and continue?

are you using v8 trial? R9 is not released yet and likely won’t be released until October the earliest. If you can be offline with rhino for 2 months I’d wait, otherwise I would still use V8 since it is a solid build anyway.

@tay.othman Tay, do you have inside knowledge, or are you a user and forum participant like me providing your best guess?

If I am an insider, I won’t be able to say anything. but I do calculated Guesses based on past events.

I started with this forum around the release of R6, for the last 3 versions:

1- BETA phase is around 3 Months

2- RC phase will appear shortly before SR1

3- Soft Launch will start quietly in this form.

4- Intro upgrade price is offered for 3-6 months following launch (around $399)

5- Most reported Bugs will be squished in SR1 , Thus official announcement is generally happens around SR2, This version 9 seems much more stable than V8 on the initial release , we initially had ETO UI crashes, PDF export issues, line type render issues. I don’t see a comparable issue happening now in V9.

The above was history, is not guaranteed this time, but it should be close to my assumptions.

I have a commercial R8 licence.

then wait for a couple of months you will be able to upgrade only if you want to.

I wish there was an option to buy 9 and use 8 whilw I wait. I am waiting only because there is no such option and paying extra 600 in a few months doesn’t seem like a wise choice, considering grasshopper is a personal hobby at home.

My usual luck… I’m ready to purchase Rhino 8 but version 9 release seems well on its way… So I wonder,
Will the upgrade always equate to $525 or is there a grace period for either those who’s purchased the previous software recently and/or buy the new one as soon as it will be released?

Regardless, I am very appreciative of the fact that McNeel has kept the pricing unvaried for such a long time, as well as allowing us to own the software with a one time purchase (honestly, what a legend!!).
Would be also great to see some incentive to purchase Rhino sooner rater than later, for those like me who are stuck in this “limbo” hehe i.e. maybe a small discount on the regular pricing to upgrade to 9, if bought version 8 X months before the new release?

If my memory is correct in the past there has been* a discount (something like 10%) has been offered for a period after the new version introduction date. The upgrade discount has been the independent of when the license to be upgraded was purchased; whether it was the day before the introduction or five years previously. Disclaimer - recollections of past practices may not accurately forecast the future.

Can the Rhino World 2026 happening in October be aligned with a good date for oficial announcement maybe? Would that hold on past launchings ?

I’m not aware of McNeel ever having an announcement event about a new version of Rhino. Rather announcements are made on the website, on the forum and by email.

Rhino 8 was launched in 2023.
From a page about the Rhino 8 launch which appears to be for resellers. https://www.rhino3d.com/en/e-news/0124sdk/

The Rhino 8 public announcements are leaking out slowly

To avoid overwhelming our sales, support, and development teams, we are “soft” launching Rhino 8 as follows:

  • We made Rhino 8 available 30 days before the first public announcements.
  • On 28-Nov, we sent the first public announcement to the Rhino 8 WIP/Beta users, (~50k)
  • A few days later, we sent an announcement to all existing Rhino users. (>500k)
  • Soon we will send an announcement to our eNewsletter subscribers. (~4.5m)
  • We will start sending “new feature” reminders to Rhino users who haven’t yet upgraded to Rhino 8. These will go out every few weeks, starting in Jan 2024.

Rhino World 2023 was October 18-20, 2023, and included presentations about what was new in Rhino 8. Of course that information was already publicly available in forum posts and to users of the Rhino 9 WIP/Beta.

Yes, just speculation from my part. But having it slowly come out in september to be locally announced in october during Rhino World and have a full on release on november/december would be good timing for me to get the last upgrade with student discount :see_no_evil_monkey:.

Just take a small cad course for 4 months

finish it in 1 month kick back and enjoy that discount

It all depends if GTA 6 is delayed

most People in this form are either PC or Mac people, GTA6 will be released on console only this year. you can request Rhino 9 for console, but I don’t think this will happen, you need to wait for Rhino 10 to run it on xbox.

Thats called the beta test release until it’s released to the real gaming platform.

Pc master race.

Or wait until 2027 for the Xbox “Project Helix” (prototype codename).
