Rhino 9 Feature: Layer Dropdown in Properties Panel

In the Rhino 9 WIP April 10, 2025 or later, there are options on this new dropdown to short cut to the exact layer row in the Layers panel or copy the entire layer name to the clipboard.

Why is this helpful?
Some models, especially those from our architectural customers, have hundreds layers. And these layers can be organized in hierarchies, multiple levels deep.

Finding the layer in the Layers panel in Rhino 8, means going to the Layers panel, and typing in the layer name of the filter field or simple scrolling. This was time consuming and also error prone.

In our customer’s words:
When we’re trying to work with particular elements in a model we’ll typically select it on-screen and use the “Properties: Object” panel to identify the layer. It’s then a pretty decent hunt to actually find that layer in the “Layers” panel, especially when they’re deeply nested.
It would be great if there were a way to jump directly from the “Properties: Object” panel to having the layer selected in the “Layers” panel.

Workflow:

  1. Open a model.
  2. Highlight a object either in a model viewport or in a layout detail.
  3. Go to the Properties panel.
  4. In the Layer property, right click on the layer.
Now you will see the dropdown appear with “Copy Layers Path to Clipboard” and “View in Layers panel.”

See our video here.

Let us know if this works for you!
You will find it in the Rhino 9 sr0 April 10, 2025 WIP or later.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

Can we assign a shortcut or alias to this and have it “auto-jump” to that layer?

Hi. Mary
This new feature will be definitely helpful !! Thanks!!
I’m just wondering if it can work without going to property panel.
