I’m using a GPD Pocket 4 with a Ryzen 9 CPU and integrated Radeon 890M graphics. Rhino 7 runs perfectly on this machine, and Rhino 8 was initially good (except for a printing issue that I scripted a workaround for), but has been increasingly unreliable over the past 3 to 6 months and is now consistently unusable, even on small files. I created a fresh empty template with a cube (my previous sanity test) and even this is no good anymore.
The issue(s):
-
Shaded views display incorrectly shaded with dark grey instead of correct colour
-
Points appear as solid squares, even when “round” is selected
-
Viewport performance is extremely poor
-
It used to be the case that when I open a Rhino 7 file in Rhino 8, it’s usually fine — but once I save it in Rhino 8 format and reopen it, the problems come back, but now I can’t even get this experiment to work. I used to think that it was the model because of this, but none of the other users in our organization have this issue (all of them are Intel and Nvidia graphics apart from me).
Checking the Video Hardware and Driver Info, Rhino 8 shows “Shading Language: Not supported”.
Things I’ve tested to try and pinpoint / resolve the issue:
-
GPU tessellation on and off
-
Every OpenGL slider setting
-
Custom and default display modes
-
Setting viewport sharpness and document mesh from a medium smoothness to fastest, to smoothest and back
-
Plugged in vs battery mode, and with different power profiles
-
VRAM allocation between, from 8 GB to 48 GB
-
Older builds of Rhino 8
-
Rhino 7, which remains completely stable and fast
At this point, I suspect the most recent AMD drivers have broken OpenGL GLSL support for this GPU, and Rhino 8 is falling back to a reduced graphics mode as a result.
Has anyone else seen this with recent AMD drivers or 780M/890M iGPUs? Is there a known good driver version? Any workaround that restores proper viewport behavior?
