Rhino 8 or 9 on Mac?

I’m currently running Rhino 7 on a Mac Studio:

I checked in a few months ago about some pretty billy basic errors with V7 and can understand that it’s not really supported on the new Mac IOS.

It’s not a criticism… I can see there seems to be countless problems with Rhino 8 too? I was hoping to hold out for Rhino 9 and skip 8, but I’m beginning to wonder if I should just get Parallels and ditch the Mac version, regardless of what version I upgrade to?

What’s the general consensus on Rhino 8 for Mac? Grok seemed to think the WIP improvements for 9 are small incremental and nothing groundbreaking… Again, not a criticism, the option of using Widows is simple enough, I just wanted to see if it was worth the wait or should I just go back to the Windows version?

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy -

Could you point to problems in Rhino 8 on macOS that are not also there in the Windows version?

Hi Wim,

I’m just going by what I can see on the most recent forum posts with a Mac filter on, I’ve not cross referenced them by platform…

I downloaded the demo of 8 quite a while ago but didn’t get around to using it on with platform, I did however contribute quite a lot to the Mac WIP in the beginning when I had a MacBook Pro over 10yrs ago.

I ended up getting a decent desktop PC for Rhino and all the other attributed software for 3D work, I don’t need to go back down that road at this point, but I really don’t want to put Windows on this thing if I can help it.

As I said, it’s not a criticism, was hoping for some honest feedback from users. I’m wondering if I should just get 8 to iron out the Mac problems I’m seeing in V7.

Just seeing some odd artefacts in exported models for 5 axis CNC and can’t be sure if it’s this version or just a known glitch on .stp exports etc. I don’t have time to try to work out the finer details, just hoping the upgrade will sort them out.

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Andy -

If you ask me, that doesn’t sounds like a healthy strategy.

If you can post a file or upload it to us, we can check if we’re seeing anything in Rhino 7 that we are not seeing in Rhino 8.

This isn’t about a specific model, Wim… I’m familiar with the quirks and tweaks needed to get things done over the past 20yrs using Rhino, it’s about confidence in the Mac version.

As I said, I was looking for responses from users other than McNeel and looking at the filtered Mac results I couldn’t be sure if 8 was any better than 7 with regard to support after this response:

I’m not getting into the weeds on a specific model as V7 on this platform is riddled with problems, I understand that it’s not supported, but wanted some feedback on V8 improvements and hopefully V9 would be more stable than 8 (over time etc).

Cheers,

Andy

Since you are using a new Mac, I’m not surprised you are having issues with Rhino 7. Rhino 7 uses OpenGL to display geometry and this technology has been deprecated by Apple with their support for OpenGL actually appearing to be a bit worse once they switched to their own “M” processors.

Rhino 8’s display was rewritten for Mac to use Metal which may help you with whatever issues you may be seeing on your system.

That’ll do it then

Thanks for the clarification

Cheers,

Andy
