Rhino 8 Crashing Every Few Hours, Sometimes More

I’m having a problem that Rhino will suddenly close, sometimes after performing a complicated task, but often during light tasks as well. Sometimes just panning around the model or paper space.

I just bought a new laptop, but it was happening on my last computer as well. Rhino was once a very stable program for me, where it might be months or a year between crashes. Not sure why this is happening now, but saving huge files every few minutes to prevent losing work is driving me crazy.

The last crash produced this:

[ERROR] FATAL UNHANDLED EXCEPTION: System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (87): The parameter is incorrect.

I’m using an Asus ProArt Studiobook Pro 16 (W7604)
Windows 11 Pro
13th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i9-13980HX
64.0 GB RAM

Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

Best to also post the result of the Rhino command _SystemInfo

Thanks Nathan, here it is:

This is a real stretch, but I have seen this in the past.

Because this is a laptop and the display, rendering and it happens after a while, I also may check GPU and CPU core temperature.

I use Coretemp app to determine if there is a cooling issue. You can also use NZXT app in Guest mode to check all the cores: NZXT CAM | PC Monitoring and Configuration Software

If colling is an issue I normally find dropping power only 1% or 2% solves it without any real performance effect.

Also, it won’t hurt to update your GPU drivers for the Nvidia GPU. They are recent yes, but there are newer available, and I believe those are a bit more stable for Rhino as well.

When you do install make sure to choose custom and check clean install.

Thanks Scott.

Not sure that’ll be it, as this is happening when the computer is really not breaking a sweat. The fans won’t even be on, nothing that strenuous happening. My only thought is that it is somehow graphics related, as I think a common factor may be that a lot of geometry is rendered (arctic mode). When it crashes in paper space, I often have a bunch of arctic mode details, and I’m just panning around the page. Just a hunch anyway.

Okay, I’ll update those drivers now.

Again, this was happening on my old machine as well. On Rhino 7 and 8, actually. This computer is only a couple weeks old.

When you crash do you get the crash reporting dialog with the sad rhino? If you do, please send in crash reports. Make sure you have your email address filled in so we have a way to connect the dots

I haven’t gotten that in a while, not sure why. I’ll send it in next time I get it for sure. :+1:

Hi @JVN,

.NET 7.0.15 is available. You might run Windows Updates and see if gets installed.
