for me the viewport hangs/lags are becoming increasingly annoying, especially when they happen during drag select. not sure but I think this happens more frequently with files that have a lot of blocks.
@Bogdan_Chipara I cannot make my Rhino crash with the file you sent. I tried for quite a while, moving rotating the view as well as the clipping plane.
@hitenter your problem seems to be a totally unrelated issue. I responded in the thread
@Gijs man, I can crash it every time.
Let me know if you need another file.

@Bogdan_Chipara yes if you can send me the file you are displaying the crash on I can try to repeat your steps. Do you get any crash report when it crashes? That info would be helpful as well to send it to find the root cause, thanks.
Can you please remind me how to send the file in private? Thanks!
hi @Bogdan_Chipara you can send it here, thanks!
@Bogdan_Chipara thanks for the file, I still cannot reproduce the issue you are seeing.
What do you see in System > Display > Graphics? I have it set this way:
It was set to Let Windows decide, I switched to High Performance.
I still get the same crash. No crash report.
I waited 4 minutes in this Not Responding state and Rhino came back to life …
During the Not Responding state, the System performance seems normal:
@Bogdan_Chipara just to be sure: did you restart Rhino before testing?
Yes I have.
Now I’m waiting for more than 5 minutes… Rhino still Not Responding.
@Bogdan_Chipara Even though it should not matter, I would want to try one more thing. Is there any update available for your AMD card?
hi @Bogdan_Chipara running out of ideas, but I made a YT for this so a developer can have a look into it. The YT is open to public, the file you sent is kept private.
RH-81765 Crash with ClippingPlane
ok, If I get any new ideas on how to test I’ll let you know.
@Bogdan_Chipara I thought you were getting actual crashes, but is this really the case, or is Rhino just turning unresponsive? In the latter case, a memory dump could give info why Rhino is hanging, I forgot to suggest that. When Rhino hangs, go to task manager, right click Rhino and create a memory dump. This will be a very large file. If you zip that and send it through file upload we can have a look.
@Bogdan_Chipara one more thing, can you try to disable GPU tesselation in your OpenGL settings and see if the problem persists? You might need to install 8.7 after this change, as it addresses problems for NVidia cards related to turning this setting off. But before installing 8.7, first see if the change has any effect (in 8.6)
Yesss !!! Finally, that’s it! the GPU tesselation !
I switched it off and there’s no crash anymore.
Version 8 SR6 (8.6.24101.5001, 2024-04-10)
hi @Bogdan_Chipara I’m glad it helps you, but I would not call this a solution, rather a band-aid. Hopefully we can find the reason why this happens on the RTX 4070 (and apparently some other cards are affected as well)
Yes, you are right, but at least we narrowed it.
Hi @Bogdan_Chipara,
I’m wondering if it would be possible for you to narrow this down to a very simplified file? One that doesn’t have very much geometry in it, and one that I can just load, do a few steps, and have Rhino hang or crash.
I’ve tried your file on a GeForce RTX here, and I cannot get things to crash.
So if/when you have time, please turn GPU Tessellation back ON, and see if you can get something very simple to crash. Others have mentioned that having a ClippingPlane object seems to cause things to crash sooner. Once you think you have something, I would load, test, and confirm that you can reproduce the crash over and over again…once you have done that, please post the file with the exact steps needed to get things to crash.
Note: Save often when creating the file
Thanks for your patience, help and feedback on this matter, it is very much appreciated.
