I am losing a lot of work lately. Rhino is saving but when I open the file I only see one layer (Default) and all my geometry is missing. The file is still quite large. All my blocks seem to be there but the layers are all gone.
Hi bobames,
Please run SystemInfo in the Rhino command line and post your results.
Can you send us a file and steps to replicate? Please put a link to this post in the upload.
Sometimes the layers seem to be gone/missing when opening rhino8. I had reported this a while ago already. for me they only seem to be not displayed and appear again after reopening the file. I haven’t noticed geometry missing.
Yes, the file size is the same, but the geometry on the default layer is almost nothing. The blocks that I have are all there, or so it seems. I was able to open the .3dmbak file, so I relaized I did not lose and entire days work. Just part of it. Now I do not know how to save the file. I gave my messed up file to tech support. We’ll see what they say.
Update: Upon further “discovery” it seems that the geometry is there in the Default layer. It was just hard to find in all the other oversized pieces.

I did upload the file.
Before my last update, my file was approaching 4GB. I have been saving small.
Thanks, we’ll take a look. Are you saving this locally or on a network/cloud drive?
locally, but it is a dropbox folder that will eventually get synced. Never been and issue in the past.
What are the steps to replicate? Thanks
Well first you’d need to start with a correct file. I can send you a .3dmbak that did load correctly.
I am realizing, that it could be something I accidently did. I need to check. It’s possible I checked save geometry only when I meant to save small. I never used save geometry only. When I look at the help file is does not preserve layers.
I am going to test this. Stand by
Ok. It looks to be me. I did a save small and a save geometry only. Save small was fine. Save geometry did what help said it would. Its quite confusing that when you go to open a file, it shows you a fully rendered model with all layers as a file image, but the content is anything but. I must have selected save geometry only instead of save small by accident. Very dangerous.
thanks for your help.
Can you close out the bug, and ask them to delete the file I sent?
Thanks for the update, consider your file gone and the case closed.
not really. layers disappearing in the layers panel when opening a file is still a thing. doesn’t happen often but sometimes. reopening the file fixes it but it is still a confusing and annoying bug.
We’ll gladly look into that when more specific information can be provided.

yeah, sure, and then I get the usual “sorry, we can’t reproduce this” answer.
edit: sorry, I’m just frustrated by the bugs in rhino8. I can’t describe it more specifically than I already did. sometimes when I open a file, no layers are shown in the layer panel. it doesn’t happen very often, I’ll provide more details when I can make out a pattern of this behavior.
