Rhino 7 crashes constantly!

Hi,

I’ve been experiencing frequent Rhino crashes, mostly when V-Ray is running, but sometimes even when only Rhino is open. After a crash, I often can’t reopen the file for days. A temporary workaround is to open the file on another computer, but this results in losing all material attributes for objects downloaded from Chaos Cloud.

I’ve already tried uninstalling and reinstalling Rhino, but the problem persists. Below is my system data.

I’d appreciate any advice or solutions to resolve this issue. Thank you!

Are there Cosmos materials involved?

If the Cosmos materials and geometry files are gettting lost, I figured out a solutiion.

  1. On all computers you use Rhino, create a directory called C:/Chaos Library [it is usually buried several folders deep in the /Users directory … which sucks for finding it!]
  2. Go into the V-Ray settings and change the download directory to C:/Chaos Library
  3. When you copy your Rhino project folder and files, be sure to do the same withe Chaos Library. Now all computers will match.

For the best possible workflow, I have a sync utility running that is always backing up and syncing both project files and the Chaos Library. When I work at a second or third computer, everything is fine / all the assets are found.

Hi Japhy, yes there are Cosmos materials involved. I just don’t understand why these crashes only happen on my main computer but not the backup computer. Please advice.

Are the resources networked? We’ll need to isolate the variables to start troubleshooting.

Hi Japhy,
All the resources are from Chaos Cloud. Could you confirm if this is what you mean by “networked”? Let me know if you need additional details to help troubleshoot. Thank you so much!

Anything not on your local drive.

Are you having issues without VRay involved?

Hi Japhy, yes, Rhino sometimes still crashes even when V-Ray isn’t open. As far as I know, all my resources are stored on the Chaos network. When saving, Rhino prompts me about embedding support files, and I usually select ‘No’ to keep the file size smaller.

Does the issue persist if you are disconnected from the internet before opening up the file?

Hi Japhy,

All my Rhino files and Chaos downloads are saved on the company server, so I believe I won’t be able to access them if I’m offline. Do you think that might be the issue? I can try resaving everything locally and testing by disconnecting from the internet.
I think the crashing started happening concurrently with a V-Ray upgrade from 5 to 6. Could there be any compatibility issues?

Hi Japhy,

I just ran into the issue with Rhino again. While rendering, the performance slowed down significantly, so I decided to save and close the file. However, when I tried to reopen it, I got an error saying Rhino encountered a problem.

I attempted dragging the corrupted file to my desktop to see if it could be opened without an internet connection, but unfortunately, it’s still inaccessible.

The only workaround I’ve found so far is opening it on another computer, but that results in losing most of the materials and attributes like before. Do you have any other suggestions or potential fixes for this issue? Thank you!

Currently it appears the issue is the networked Vray materials, did you try Dave’s suggestion?

Hi Japhy,

I haven’t tried that yet because the other computer is still running V-Ray 5, and I no longer have access to it. I only have one license for V-Ray 6.

Do you think the issue could be related to using Rhino 7 with V-Ray 6? My operating system is up to date, and my hardware is only two years old, so I’m not sure what could be causing the problem. What’s especially puzzling is that everything worked fine when I was using Rhino 7 with V-Ray 5, but the issues only started after upgrading to V-Ray 6.

Additionally, after the crash today, when I try to open V-Ray in Rhino, I now get the error: “Unable to acquire V-Ray for Rhino GUI license.”

Any insights you might have would be greatly appreciated!

My knowledge of V-Ray is purely from user posts, have you tried the Chaos Forum/Support?

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your suggestion! Could you please explain briefly how your sync utility works? I currently have a server connected to my computer. Would it be possible to save all my COMOS materials directly on the server instead of the C drive?

Thanks for your help!

Hey @Bill_Tsui

The key is that it every computer should find the directory in the SAME PLACE. If you have an office server, then that network location will work great for every computer on the office network. However, it will NOT be visible on your laptop when you are off-site.

I used to use an app called SyncToy by Microsoft. It is free and can be found online.

Lately, I am using a more sophisticated approach. My Synology NAS has a utility that can be installed on any computer. It runs in the background and syncs my Chaos Library to every computer where I use Rhino and V-Ray. This works in the office, home, and travel laptop.

As soon as I turn on any off-site computer, the app runs and syncs automatically.
