Rhino 6 display issues

Hi Everyone

I recently installed Rhino 6. I sincerely hope someone can help on this one.

The problem, I suppose is that I run windows within parallels which Rhino does not support.

However, I have done this for several years on Rhino 5 and have not had any major issues.

Would anyone mind looking at my system info below and guessing what the issues may be?

I will take that info to the parallels forum and try to find a workaround?

I know there are several members of this forum that are running Rhino in parallels so if I do figure it out I’ll post the solution here.

The problem is around the surface display in render mode. Surfaces and poly surfaces don’t seem to display at all.

Strangely I never had these issues in the Rhino wip.

Thanks!

Here is my system info

Rhino 6 requires OpenGL 4.1. Your system only supports 2.1.
This is actually very bad for people with older computers as they are forced to scale up an also for those using Rhino on a Mac via Parallels, as Parallels 13 - the latest version - only supports OpenGL 3.1. Could take a long time for the programmers to implement 4.1. Not good at all!

Rhino V6 uses OpenGL 3.3
Parallels (as you said), is 2.1 and Not supported.

We tried to support VMWare Fusion as the current version is OpenGL 3.3, but it’s still too buggy to support.

Hi Guys

Thanks for getting back to me. Thats a real pity. If Fusion 10 VW is an option instead of parallels that would be a good place to start.

Fusion is Not a supported option either.

Hi Guys

I have a laptop that I have not really used. I’m just not sure if it will handle paneling tools, or Rhino 6 ? Do you think it might?

Lenovo IdeaPad 500 AMD Notebook AMD Quad FX-8800P 3.40Ghz 8GB 1TB 15.6" WXGA HD R5 M330 2GB BT Win 10 Home

I would test it but its in South Africa and I’m in Canada.

Dear John,
thanks for your reply. We are an artist studio and we just bought five copies (3 upgrades and 2 full versions) of Rhino 6. We run it on Macs only via parallels. Because it worked so well with Rhino 5 we didn’t look better into the requirements for V6. Now we are back on V5 - still great - but a bit dissapointed heaving spend money on a product we can’t use with the hardware we have… There is a lot of people out there running Rhino on their Macs / Parallels and allow me to say that it would have been nice if you guys from McNeel would have made this a bit more transparent and obvious, although I know that you always make clear, that the program is not supposed to be used like that…Do you by any chance know from the parallels developers, when they will have OpneGL 3.3 implemented in their software?

Hi @John_Brock

I finally boot camped my Mac. It is much faster and I can operate Rhino 6.

I have a slightly blurry quality to the text on my second monitor in Rhino 6. Which is beginning to give me a headache?

Both displays work well for Rhino 5 as well as the other applications I have tried.

My primary monitor is the Macbook pro retina display mid-2015 and

My secondary display is HP 27 ES 1920X1080 LCD (http://www8.hp.com/emea_africa/en/products/monitors/product-detail.html?oid=10402875#!tab=specs) This is the problem monitor.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

thank you

We put a lot of effort into getting V6 to work with VMWare Fusion since that product supports OpenGL 3.3. Rhino won’t work as well as on a native Windows system, but in general it should work. We chose to target Fusion instead of Parallels solely because of the availability of OpenGL 3.3. I don’t know when the Parallels team will improve their OpenGL support, but when they do we’ll reinvestigate what it would take to get Rhino to run properly on Parallels.

Hi Steve.

That’s exciting news for all of us Mac people. Will keep this in mind going foreword. I am going to keep the boot camp for now until I can get a bigger machine.

Any idea why my second monitor is fuzzy on Rhino 6?

@seanSpace,

I think it has to do with the fact that one monitor is high resolution and the other is 1080p. Check the “Scale and layout” settings for each display in Windows. The monitors probably have different %-values?

@DavidEranen I did try that this morning again and realized that Rhino 6 looks better @ 125 % & Rhino 5 works @ 100 % so thank you!!

@stevebaer I was up half the night thinking about this Fusion alternative. It’s really great news. I also read up a little bit about Fusion ad realized that you can set its RAM use.

I have two questions :

Will Windows Rhino on Fusion be significantly slower than Windows Rhino on Bootcamp ?

And will it be supported by McNeel?

I think many users ( @robert6, @Evan_M and many others) are going to be very happy.

best

Yes, Rhino will be slower under virtualization compared to running natively on a Bootcamp partition.

No, Fusion is not specifically supported. If you go that route, you’re on your own.
It’s certainly better than the alternatives but it’s still to buggy and slow to support it officially. No VMs are supported.

For 3D in general, Bootcamp is always your best bet to run Windows on a Mac, because, when doing so, it’s effectively a real Windows PC.

All the local virtualization options (Parallels, Fusion, Virtualbox) have generally been a bag of hurt, historically, with Rhino, and not worth the effort unless used very very lightly with very simple models. Trust me, I’ve tried them all over the years.

That said, I have not tried 6 and Fusion to evaluate the optimizations mentioned above…and probably won’t.

Just a note; we did spend a lit of effort to try and get VMWare to work with Rhino 6. Overall it should work decent, but not as well as a native Windows environment. If you are going to even try VMWare Fusion, make sure to use the absolute latest version.

It appears the McNeel is unwilling to reach out to Parallels to build the kind of support that it’s users want and need. Parallels 14 is just released with support for OpenGL 3.2. However Rhino for some reason does not recognize this when queried in the Options panel. Other modeling software like SketchUp is supported. Should we go use that software?

https://kb.parallels.com/en/115487

Do you get an error message when starting Rhino 6 in Parallels 14?

That is untrue. We put a ton of work into V6 to support VMWare Fusion because they supported OpenGL 3.2. Parallels 14 was released only a couple days ago and if it really supports OpenGL 3.2 then we’ll investigate what it takes to run at this level.

Some McNeel developers use Parallels on a daily basis. Rhino may not run great on that platform, but it should run. We have just seen enough problems with it that we can’t support it very well.

Kind of harsh, imo. My assessment is that McNeel is unusually ‘willing’ generally speaking, within reasonable expectations.

Obviously, the path to nirvana is to use the Mac version. What’s missing from it that is holding you back presently? Pressure towards that end might be more productive, long term, than continued reliance on local virtualization.

On my part frustrated because I’ve just upgraded to Rhino 6 to find OpenGL not supported in Parallels 13. I read this thread saw support specs for the new Parallels 14, purchased that upgrade to address this issue to find that still not working. I have been impressed with McNeels fluid compatibility with other software in the past. This is definitely an exception.
