I received an email from McNeel saying that older versions of rhino are now no longer supported as “technology has advanced…..et etc etc.” So does this mean i have to upgrade to Rhino 8 from Rhino 5 for $595 US without any savings??.
McNeel advertises that your license is “perpetual and does not expire.”
The email goes further and states the “older versions of the software can no longer keep up with current technology.”
yet, the website states “If you upgrade your computer’s hardware or operating system, you may need to purchase an upgrade to maintain compatibility.” huh
The email states that McNeel cannot guarantee your Rhino 5 will keep working, given it was designed for hardware and software released a decade ago. For instance, Windows 7 was Microsoft’s supported OS when Rhino 5 released. Windows 7 (And Windows 8 and 10 now) are no longer supported by Microsoft. On the Mac, it’s way worse. macOS versions from that era are considered pre-historic by Apple.
You can upgrade from Rhino 1 to Rhino 8 or Rhino 7 to Rhino 8 for the same exact upgrade price, if you choose to. You can always run Rhino 5 if you can keep it going–we’re not going to kill any Rhinos intentionally.
