Do you mean a .rmtl file? No, those are imported and no connection to the .rmtl file is maintained nor watched for subsequent changes.
If you mean image texture files then in theory Rhino should notice that and react to that.
Reacting is incomplete - Rendered mode and texture preview don’t update correctly (at least on Mac), will log that. edit: logged as RH-84326 Editing texture doesn’t properly update preview and Rendered mode

Will see how it goes. I realize, also from the other issue we discussed, that Rhino does quite a lot of caching. For example, when I rename a texture file, to my surprise, Rhino does not complain. I’m still trying to understand it all.
