Is there a way to expand the length of the red marked up object at the bottom of the UI so I don’t have to hover over it? And what is that area called? Status bar??

Go to Options → Advanced, search for StatusBarLayerPaneWidth, and increase the value.
You’ll need to restart Rhino to see the effect.

I have Rhino 7 , and that option wasn’t found. It must be from a newer version.
