Random Staggered Lengths Within a Boundary

Sorry I am a novice - I am trying to make a series of random points that drop down and are staggered at random lengths but within a boundary - ideally a revolved parabola which I was trying to work into the workflow unsuccessfully while keep a maximum drop length. I’m having trouble understanding what additional parameters I need to set - thanks in advance.

Hello Danny,

I studied your file, and try to understand what you want to achieve… but I do not understand
I see you have at the left a surface where it is allowed to have cylinders.
then a random number of points.
3 different ways to get random length and
at the far right the cylinders.

I could react a bit on how things might be a bit easier, (like using the Pipe command instead of cylinders) but it starts with a good explanation of your side.

Please try to say in a couple of sentences/rules what should happen and how you see the logic .

Regards, Eef

I am trying to get the end points where the cylinders drop from to be at staggered heights so that from any side, it doesn’t look like they are in line with each other.

And while keep staggered heights, trying to set a sort of conical boundary so points closest to the center are the longest and progressively taper off. I can’t figure out how and what point I should include the random component or graph should be added.

Probably somebody jumps in with a better 3D solution, but being a rather beginner myself, I suggest:

  • You have made a surface (the circle with circle in it, to limit the number of points.
  • looking at your image just above, you can imagine a surface like a bullet with a parabolic point and closed a bit above half of the height.
  • In that surface create the same number of random points.
  • measure the length to the top line,
  • use these otand all lengths will be inside this shape.

But even better, would be to create that bullet shaped cylinder and create a cloud of points in it.
Connect every point to your top surface.

As said, in a minute Rene will launch his solution

Hi Dani.

Here`s my take

haha @Eef_Weenink you saw me rushing to reply, and I did, but I think it was overkill/misleading with Kangaroo—I liked what @mario.vergara did.

Very nicely done with the sphere scaled to a bullet shape!

Thank you all for the incredible help! So interesting. Learning, appreciate it.

… mm-hmm.

This will give you an actual parabola under the circle:

I would even skip staggering of the lamp heights because otherwise you do not get proper expression of the bullet shaped envelope.

To do that, just connect the output of the Expression component to the Clampcomponent and delete the blue group.

@René_Corella what were you planning to do with Kangaroo?

Haha I was up to no good—dropping the points with ‘gravity’ (hanging mesh) and what not, which works and looks natural but is stupid for this case because then you’d have to keep them from moving in X or Y so lines remain straight lol

Have you started making trouble in your neighbourhood?

Funny you ask, had too much ‘fun’ with GH working late, the dog didn’t care and got walked around 3 AM…we forgot our poop bags. I’m that neighbor now :frowning:

p.s.: I’ll redeem myself (and the dog) during the evening walk!
