Question about mutiple subd continuity compared to nurbs


I am investigating practical capabilities of subd, and I would like to ask is it possible to achieve similar result as below (where I used 2 seperate nurbs surfaces to form polysurface) with 2 seperate subds, and point count on edge is not equal. Is the same number of points on shared edge is required in subds to obtain a similar result?

they at least have to match up with the edges, having the exact number is not needed but probably better for further modelling purposes and in anyway to close them successfully some of the vertex points would have to match completely and having vertex points exceeding edges would not work.
