QUAD SNAP refuses to circle over a mesh V8

Hi, V8
mesh layer ON.
I draw a circle, centre 0,0,
select last created object command
tool line from midpoint, osnaps quad is on, refuses to snap to quad. top of circle

mesh V2 no ruler layer (near bottom of layer palette, turned on.
which now shows the obj mesh as it should do, after 15 days tribulations,
by using my method of …
V8 file open the V5, obj displays ok.
select it and edit copy.
file new and choose the template for Small Objects Inches v5 into v8 dims 1:1.
file import, select the V5 file.
obj appears BAD.
DELETE THE LAYER
edit paste, reappears GOOD !

save it !
so see the file you guys and gals have at McNeels.and do that.
then test this issue.

…and if I copy this circle and blue line out to a new template 1:1 dims for V5 then it snaps as End,Int, QUAD.
for some reason being with a mesh turned on the QUAD snap fails.

Please copy paste into my file you have and go to left view and see if it does it for you.
I am with latest V8, updated yesterday !

try this in V5 and get a quad snap first time.

end int QUAD wont do a quad WHEN OVER MESH.3dm (2.3 MB)

Cheers
Steve

If you work outside of a template (just a new file, no template) does it misbehave?

all snaps work here as expected. I’m wondering if there may be an issue with your template file, working on a default template, or a new file with no template would be worth testing.

Hi Steve -

Is this in the Left viewport in Rendered mode?
When I import your “end int QUAD wont do a quad WHEN OVER MESH.3dm” into “RAF Type C Mk III EK NsideFrontBrakeAssy_RhinoV5 1to1InchDec template v3 MESSABOUT.3dm”, that circle is not visible because it’s behind the mesh (and also not on the plane of the clipping plane). In Rhino 5, you could snap to invisible geometry. In Rhino 8, you need to see the object to snap to. When you select the circle, snapping to the quad works here:

Hi,
yes it will sit behind or within the mesh, and it was in left view so correct.
and having drawn the circle I went select last created, then selected line from midpoint, and went to the top to get a quad osnap and couldnt get one.

In V5 I can.
so geometry needs to be in front of a mesh to snap to, you say, for V8.
is that a conscious decision by developers, or stating what the bug is ?

That state of play is no use at all as I need the geometry where I made it, goes without saying !

This in fact rings a bell, there might be another thread on this from earlier attempt to use V8.

I recall a bug fix ?
but when ?

However not being able to snap to objects within or behind a mesh, whats the solution ?

@theoutside
I will have to place that obj into a standard template and test , when I get 5 mins.
My template was I took the inches small objects template, altered dim styles to match V5, saved it as template suffix 1to1 for v5 (or words to that effect)
Should that make a difference ?

Steve

Hi Steve -

No, that’s not what I say. And the picture I posted shows otherwise. It needs to be visible. Selecting an object makes it visible.

Sounds like this one? → RH-86388 OSnap: Check DrawOrder for Occlusion

Which version of Rhino are you currently running?

This has nothing to do with templates.

Hi,
I am using (or trying to) Rhino 8.17.25066.7001, 2025-03-07
I accepted the update prompt a couple of days ago.
before this snap thing.
so if bring to front solves the snap, as per the link and your comment now fixed.
why was I unable to get quad at circle top ?

Steve

Hi Steve -

RH-86388 was fixed in Rhino 8.18. You are running 8.17.

I checked 8.16 and snapping to an occluded but selected circle behind a mesh works as expected there. So this is something else.

When you open the attached file and run the following macro, is the cursor snapping to the circle’s quads in the “Front” viewport?
Snap to Quads behind Mesh.3dm (2.1 MB)

SelCrv Line Quad
