Project - fail - not conforming

Having some issues with “Project”.

  1. the one on the left wont conform to the surface once projected. The one on the right will.
  2. if i remove or tweak the edges on the one on the right before projecting it then fails to conform.
  3. If i subdivide the left mesh then it will conform. somehow this is rebuilding something that prevents a clean projections.
