Problem with Importing mesh file but wrong orientation into rhino

Hello again,
I’m facing an issue that I’ve been trying to solve for a while now and i couldn’t figure it out.

I’m exporting a mesh geometry file from SpaceClaim (ansys 3d modeling software), as obj, stl, etc., and importing them into rhino but the coordinates between both software aren’t compatible, it’s like upon importing, the orientation of the file is messed up, but for example, point A (x,y,z) belongs to the mesh on SpaceClaim, after importing into rhino3d it doesn’t belong to the mesh anymore.

I’d really appreciate any help. many thanks!

Hi Sam - on importing obj, you can specify ‘Y-Up’

Hi Pascal, I’m doing that exactly but still points won’t work between the two software, and i crucially need the compatibility to be able to pursue my study.

Hm - well, I guess if you can post an exmaple obj we can try to sort out what the needed transform is.

I’m sorry I didn’t get you properly, need me to upload the obj file?

Apologies for the double answer earlier just realised that.

Hi Sam -

Yes, please.

supports Rhino / .3dm file format (v4,v5)
so maybe you get better results with another format ?

also check if you use z-up-setting - or if export will convert Y-up to Z-up.
(video for setting z-up)

Hello Wim, this is a we-transfer link that will take you to the obj file:

Best,

Hi Tom,

I tried exporting it in every type of format and importing it into Rhino and realized that the orientation of the mesh does not relate to the difference but of the material type and surface type.

Warm Regards,

Hi Sam -

When I import that OBJ file, a single object is created.
Which “point A (x,y,z)” doesn’t “belong” to the mesh anymore?
Perhaps you could also post a screen shot of what you see in SpaceClaim?
