Hi,
I have a scene made up of several objects including a pointcloud from a 3D laser Scanner.
when I vew the scene in a standard viewport, the pointcloud appears as it should Behind the other foreground objects.
When I render the scene using Rhino Render, the pointcloud appears to be in front of everything else, hiding all of the objects.
Hi Mike -
Could you post a simple file that shows this behavior? So far, in a quick test, I’m unable to get the point cloud to render at all…
(and I do have the Render points and point cloud
option ticked).
Also, please paste your Rhino SystemInfo
in a reply here so that we can take a look at the same version.

Hi Wim,
Did you have the “Points and Pointclouds” option ticked in the Render Post Effects as well as the general Render panel options ?
The pointcloud is from a Laser Scanner imported as an e.57 file, so it might be different to the one that you have made.
I have attached a sampleof the pointcloud here-
Hull_Section_6mm.e57 (3.7 MB)
I just made a scene with the pointcloud with a box in front of it,
you can see when I render the file, the pointcloud appears to be in front of the box.
Oh…and the clipping plane doesnt clip the pointcloud when rendering…

Hi @Mike_A,
Yes, we are aware of this issue. It only happens in the Raytraced viewport, not when doing a Render in the render window. Here is the YouTrack item: https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-62399.
Hi David,
Should I start looking for a work-around for this issue ?
What is the usual timeline for issues like this .
Regards,
Mike.
Hey Mike -
Only David is qualified to give a real answer in this specific case, but, generally, just reading the YT item, it seems like this might be quite involved. It is currently on the 8.x list but I wouldn’t be sitting around waiting for this…

Hi Wim,
Thank you, I thought as much.
I can render the pointclouds /objects out onto separate layers then combine them with Photoshop /After Effects.
Regards,
Mike.
I still bump into this issue when using the WIP8 version. I also don’t manage to render the meshes in front of the pointcloud when using the render window.
Screenshots below are from the (8.0.23024.12305) WIP version. However, on the YouTrack, it is marked as “Ready to be announced”…
Dag Max -
Yes, it looks like that issue was fixed in 7.11.
When you use the 3dm file that is provided in that YouTrack issue, do you get the correct result?
This is what I see:
If that works fine for you as well, perhaps you could post a 3dm file that demonstrates the issue? Either post that here or use Rhino - Upload to Support and make sure to mention this thread in the comments field.
