Planarize control points

Hello - I am not sure I know what this is… ?

-Pascal

Please excuse, I should have explained what I meant.

You mentioned here that V5 had a Control Point-Mode that had the ability to move Control Points along their Tangent Extentions. Apparently that was changed for V6 due to the “Shallow Angle Problem” between the Tangent Extention and the next Polygon.

So my hope was to go back to the original V5 Mode and only use the Tangent Extention part from that without the need of using the TAB key.

This would pretty much solve my CP modelling needs for fast “Control Point Clean up” without any new development needed.

A dedicated CP Planarization Tool would be great, but the V5 mode would be sufficient as I usually do my CP “Clean Up” by hand anyway.

Ah, OK - no, at least, I do not see that happening in V7 - you’ll still need the tab key as far as I know - I think overall the V5 way was deemed noisier and more prone to error than the more explicit ‘v6 way’…

-Pascal

@pascal Thanks for the reply, having neither is really unfortunate.

I understand that V5 was more prone to error, thats why I hoped for the “Tangent Extenion Only” part of that…maybe next time.

Didn’t even know v5 had that option, what I normally do is draw a curve using the CV points for reference, then scale 1d the cv I want to move along that curve to mimic that behavior.
@pascal is there a way to modify your script to work along multiple surfaces at the same time?

Hello- Do you mean planarize an arbitrary selection of control points?

-Pascal

let say you have 3 surfaces for example that have cv’s along U direction that are aligned but maybe have some cv’s that are wobbly I would like to planarize them using the auto option of your script so they are smoother.

Hello- I don’t know - I guess I need a simple example of a start and desired end…

-Pascal

planarize multi example.3dm (72.6 KB)
here’s a sample file with a row of “wobbly” cvs.

if I bump up to deg 5 and match curvature you can see that the hulls are distorted even though they are technically aligned G2.

Hello - Align has some options that should help here.

-Pascal

oh! thats pretty cool, this must be a newer option in the tool as I don’t recall being able to do this with hulls in V5. only issue I see IMO compared to your script is it doesn’t seem to work without moving the border hull Cvs. planarize script is able to smooth out the internal hull and I would love to do the same thing across more than one surface.

This script is worth its weight in gold ; )

Clean surface CV structures improve subsequent matching.
