@Gijs @menno New version of Patch: The Preview and Refine options should be sticky, including when Rhino is shutdown and later restarted or off by default.
My preference is off by default but I recognize there are reasons they may be preferred to be on by default. That’s ok as long as they are sticky.
We have deliberated this a lot going back and forth between sticky/not-sticky. For now the default is that Preview is always on and Refine is off unless the patch is untrimmed. We think that this is a good trade off between usability on the one hand, and preventing that the users starts with a situation where they need to wait for a long time, only to find that settings need to be changed to get a good patch. Long story short: this will not be changed.
@menno What is the reason not make the options sticky, perhaps in the Advanced options, and provide the user with the option to start with the behavior they prefer? How do sticky options adversely affect usability? Not being sticky adversely affects my usability. I don’t want to preview the results until I am ready to. I never want Refine on, particularly not with untrimmed.
If that is the way you want to work, do this: start Patch and give Enter before selecting any constraints. Change the preview, refine and domain options to your liking, then click the constraints button to select the input. Preview and refine will stay switched off.
I’d still like to know the reasons why making the options sticky is undesirable.
Making options sticky, especially the situation where both Preview and Refine are on at the start of the command, is undesirable.
Every time the command ends, it will for sure have Preview on, and in a lot of situations Refine will also be on. This is great because that worked to get the patch in the situation where the command ended.
Then the user starts a completely different case: Preview is sticky-on, Refine is sticky-on and command will immediately start making a possibly very dense patch that takes a long time to compute. This is what we want to prevent, and that is the reason that the choices were made as outlined before.

Perhaps what I need is the ability to set the initial states of Preview and Refine in the “Advanced” part of “Rhino Options” .
