Pachyderm material questions

Hello @Arthur !
I am using rhino7 and pachyderm to simulate noise from indoor construction sites, attempt to predict the dBA indoors and outdoors when sound barriers are installed.

The green part is the sound barriers, the other part is the building structure. After trying to run the grasshopper, I found that the dBA obtained outdoors were too low. So I reviewed the material settings and turned on Semi-Transparent Material.

I thought that turned on Semi-Transparent Material would allow more energy to be transferred outdoors, but after running the grasshopper again, the outdoor dBA dropped to zero.

Did I misunderstand something? Please help, thanks!

Hi Richard,

It’s a bit tough without having a copy of your model. My guess is that there is a mistake somewhere. If you are trying to do transparencu, then you should model those walls without thickness also, so rays only pass thru once in the way out of the model.

However, you should know that a problem like that doesn’t lend itself well to a geometrical Acoustics simulation. Wave based methods should be considered.

If you are just experimenting, and this isn’t a serious effort to predict noise, then please send me your model for review. I also recommend that you update to the latest version, which is only available in rhino 8.

Kind regards,

Arthur

Thank you for the reply!
I changed those wall thickness to 0, and everything seems to work fine now.
I am using educational license for rhino 7, so unfortunately rhino 8 is not an option for me, but still thanks for your advise.
The attached model and grasshopper file is the file I used. If you want to take a look, please feel free to use it.
Thanks again for your help — I really appreciate it!

Hi,

If you own your educational license, then you should be able to update at the reduced price. When you update, you go to a commercial license, unless you update to another educational version.

Give it some thought. If you are a serious Pachyderm user, it would be worth your while.
