I would like to join (1) and (2) in the attached image using (3). What method should I use to achieve a natural and beautiful join? If it is possible to join only (1) and (2) without using (3), I would be fine with that method.

this sounds like a job for subd… check out the paper doll hand model for ideas.
you can “paper doll” this shape as a flat part then simply add the thickness.
If you are starting with a flat surface, this is the way to go…
