If it was to happen it would force the studios into a position of having to film only in the US and pay US rates which they dont want to do. We would see a reduction in productions far worse than it is now. Studios have already left other states to go overseas due to better incentives and cheaper labor just like every other industry that has left the country. The cost of living is too high in the US to sustain the labor force on what industries want to pay and Trump is making it worse by tanking the economy. There are many people still out of work since the fires and the strikes. Production is down significantly and this will only make it worse. If his goal is to kill the entertainment industry then thats what will happen. Studios will adjust and adapt to something that still allows them to produce but we will see a large push towards AI to reduce costs which will destroy the labor force across the board. Nobody will be unaffected. And maybe thats his goal , to destroy the industry he views as an enemy of the right which is ironic considering all the CEOS, board members and shareholders are all his supporters or right leaning.
Instead of imposing Tariffs he should be creating a Federal tax incentive program. To be clear Im against the tax incentives as a whole because its basically extorting money out of states in exchange for boosting local economies so the studios can get someone else to pay for their product.
And its not just the cheaper labor force. Its also the fact that European countries have universal health care and the studios dont have to contribute to that. Same goes for pensions. In the US they have to pay a percentage into medical and pension per employee which adds to the cost .
That’s a myth. Where I come from you pay half and your employer pays half or more into the health care, pension, and social fund per employee. “Universal” health care doesn’t exist here. If you don’t work, you aren’t covered!
The way European socialism is often portrait in US media is simply wrong on so many levels, not only when the right-wing mouthpieces spew about it.
But you’re right in that many European countries have film funds that are meant to incentivise films and animations to be made locally and to attract foreign talent.
I think the idea that everybody is theoretically forced to participate at least financially in society via taxes or social funds is important to not end up in a society where people only look after themselves, which is simply bad for moral. If everybody just cares about themselves and maybe their families that’s a pretty horrible and pitiful state to be in as a society.
Since Covid many digital jobs can and are offshored to much cheaper countries. AI is blamed for, but in reality the progress on remote desktops/ cloud infrastructure is the reason for it. Not sure if the idea behind these tariffs is to fight this development, but its maybe a partial solution. In many industries outsourcing destroys jobs in “expensive” countries, because the money is not returning. I have worked in industrial projects, where 95% of the high skilled labour was replaced to best-cost countries. Nobody buys these products there, so how should the money return? Yes you save money, but on the longer run you shovel your own grave. It’s concerning how this problem is ignored.
I really don’t want to see this place turn into Twitter but it is comical seeing people trying to come up with rationalizations for these policies when the answer is that Trump simply likes tariffs.
I’m not defending Trump. I’m not US citizens so I don’t know much about his reasoning, but in Europe the problem of outsourcing is entirely ignored… You might recognize it if you are affected.
@Japhy I respect this, but I wonder when such a meta-discourse became so problematic? I sometimes wish a more neutral and relaxed discussion. This why you cannot discuss it on X and similar. Anyway
